Product Overview

The 2019 iPad Air represents not just the revival of an old brand name, but the creation of a "mid-tier" iPad between budget models and Pros. It incorporates an A12 Bionic processor, the same as in the iPhone XS, as well as a 10.5-inch Retina display with True Tone ambient color matching. The third-generation iPad Air is 6.1 millimeters thick, weighs about 1 pound, and comes in Silver, Gold, and Space Gray colors.

Externally it's similar to the 2017 iPad Pro in many ways, retaining thick bezels, a Touch ID sensor, a Lightning connector, and a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack. The iPad Air 3 even has a Smart Connector for compatible keyboards, and supports the first-generation Apple Pencil, despite a second-gen stylus being launched for 2018 iPad Pros.

On the rear is an 8-megapixel, f/2.4 autofocus camera with options like Live Photos, burst shooting, and image stabilization. In can record video up to 1080p resolution, including slow motion at 120 frames per second. The front-facing FaceTime HD camera is a 7-megapixel f/2.2 unit with "Retina" (screen) flash, but can only record video at 30fps.

Two main variants are available: one limited to Wi-Fi, the other adding 2G, 3G, and 4G cellular -- compatible networks may vary depending on where you buy your iPad. Cellular models have a nano-SIM slot, and may also support Apple SIMs and eSIM technology, again depending on which region you buy your iPad.

Do keep in mind that Apple charges extra for cellular features, and you'll have to pay monthly carrier fees for remote data. Even if you don't care about remote data, though, you might want a cellular model if you have offline apps that can use GPS or GLONASS location tracking.

Both versions should run for up to 10 hours of continuous use on Wi-Fi, or 9 hours when relying on 4G. That's consistent with Apple's normal promises for iPads.

Regardless of which connection options you choose, you'll have to pick between 64 or 256 gigabytes of storage. Unless your needs are relatively barebones, it's probably wise to get 256 -- you'd be surprised at how quickly an iPad can fill up with apps, music, video, and other files.

Review

Mark Linsangan

  • The 2019 iPad Air is Apple's newest mid-to-high tier tablet, and falls just below the Pro line and just above the sixth-generation iPad, making it unexciting, but arguably the go-to tablet for the general consumer.
